To anyone who’s dined on hearty, taverna-style Greek fare in Greek neighborhoods in New York (Astoria) or Chicago (Greektown), Kaplanidis’ restaurant will seem instantly familiar: It’s not a high-end place, but it is a place that serves authentic versions of the classics: avgolemono (egg lemon) soup, dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), taramosalata (whipped caviar spread), pastichio (Greek-style lasagna), baklava and, of course, gyros (pronounced yee-ros — the Greek sandwich stuffed with your choice of pork, chicken or ground beef and lamb).
